St Philip Neri founded the Oratory in mid-16th Century Rome, and John Henry, Cardinal Newman, established the English Oratory in mid-19th Century Edgbaston, Birmingham and then in Brompton, London. Among names connected with the Oratory are the hymn writers Father Edward Caswall and Father Frederick Wilfred Faber, and the novelist J. R. R.
