The discalced carmelite Friars and Nuns are a religious community within the Catholic Church. Founded in Spain by St Teresa of Jesus (Avila) and St John of the Cross in the sixteenth century as a reform of the twelfth century Carmelite order, to restore the original contemplative and eremitical focus of the order.
